What Does a Finance Analyst Do?

David William October 26, 2021 2 min read

A finance analyst is a professional who carries out financial analysis on behalf of clients. They may work for an external firm or an internal company. In either case, they will perform calculations to determine the profitability of a business investment. The role of a finance analyst requires a certain level of education. In addition, this career may involve a variety of responsibilities.

Candidates should have strong computer skills and knowledge of relevant technology. They should also be able to effectively communicate in both oral and written forms. Good interpersonal skills and knowledge of financial reports are also essential. Finally, they should be able to justify their choice of industry. As with all aspects of a job application, the right candidate should be able to clearly explain why he or she is qualified for the position.

The tasks and responsibilities of a finance analyst will depend on their level of education and experience. Entry-level analysts usually have a bachelor’s degree in finance and some prior work experience. They will likely work with a team of analysts and carry out administrative tasks. However, an entry-level analyst may also be responsible for deeper analysis of the market.

A finance analyst needs to have strong analytical skills and be able to identify financial problems in a company. He or she must also be able to use data analytics tools to analyze the company’s finances. One of the primary responsibilities of a finance analyst is research, and they must know how to do this effectively and efficiently. This includes using government reports and internal databases to gather information about a company’s financial health.

Besides technical skills, a finance analyst must also have excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills. They should be able to work with a team and be able to listen to nonverbal cues. In addition, they should be able to present their findings in a way that engages their audience.

An entry-level finance analyst typically holds a bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting. However, some financial analysts opt for postgraduate studies to supplement their education and improve their employment opportunities. Obtaining an MSc in financial markets will give you a broad understanding of finance and the analytical tools used by the industry.

A finance analyst works under the supervision of a finance manager and performs day-to-day business operations. He or she also advises on advanced financial practices, develops new systems for recording financial data, and develops innovative ways to track compliance with financial regulations. He or she may also perform audits of a company during tax season.

A finance analyst can also advance to a senior level if he or she is skilled and well-experienced. Senior level financial analysts analyze data, advise on investment decisions, and supervise finance department staff. They can also lead a team of analysts.
